It is seen in “monumental sculpture" and architecture from ancient times to present.

Sunken or Bas ReliefSunken or Bas Relief  Sunken or Bas relief, also known as intaglio or hollow relief, is where the image is made by carving into a flat surface. The images are usually mostly linear in nature. It is most notably associated with the art of Ancient Egypt, where the strong sunlight usually needed to make the technique successful for images is present most of the time.

Your AssignmentYour Assignment  Your assignment is to create a ceramic relief tile using a famous artwork as inspiration.  Your tile will be approximately 10 x 10 inches in size  Your tile will be highly detailed and contain many details  After your tile is fired, you will paint it using acrylic paint.

Step 1 – Choosing an Artwork  Choose one of the following art styles/movements and go to Type your art style in the search box and browse through some artwork. Choose three images and show them to your teacher, who will assist you in choosing one.  Open your image in Photoshop and follow the instructions on how to alter, grid and print your image.

Step 2 – Preparing the TileStep 2 – Preparing the Tile  Slice off a piece of clay about 2 inches thick using the wire cutter.  Throw your clay 2 or 3 times on the table to stretch it and remove air bubbles.  Run in through the slab roller at ¾” thick.  Place it directly on your canvas board and trim it to 10 x 10 inches using a ruler and cutting tool.

Step 3 - Transferring your design Let your slab firm up slightly so you can draw on it without warping it or distorting the outside perimeter. Using your pin tool, LIGHTLY draw a new grid that corresponds with your original grid and transfer your design. Keep your original printout to use a reference! Begin to layer your tile according to the foreground, middleground and background you see in your original painting. Remember you will have to score, slip and seal layers together in some places! Simulated textures are very important in this project! Find ways to make textures that look like a painting.

Step 4 - Painting your tileStep 4 - Painting your tile  After your tile has been bisque fired, you will paint it using acrylic paints.  Acrylic paints are water soluble; often, it is a good idea to thin the paint a bit with water when you paint on your first layer in order to get into tiny crevasses.  Once you are sure the painting is complete, it will be sprayed with acrylic varnish.

Grading  You will be graded on the following criteria:  Creativity/Composition – Did you choose an interesting artwork to replicate? Does your tile have an aesthetically pleasing composition? Is it unique?  Technique/Draftsmanship – Are objects proportional? Did you use appropriate tools for handling certain sculptural areas?  Craftsmanship – Was your tile thoughtfully planned and carefully constructed with attention to detail? Is it free of cracks, smudges, drips, etc?  Requirements – Does your tile meet the size requirements listed on the instruction sheet? Does it contain both additive and subtractive methods? Was it handed in on time and is it labeled with your name?
