Assessing Students with Disabilities Using Computer Technologies Presented to: Dr. Manuel Johnican EDU 510 – Educational Assessment By: Dorian Webb September 7, 2014

Presentation Agenda Research topic proposition Three Issues related to assessing students with disabilities Specific Needs of Students Three applications related to K-12 Assessment Relevance of Assessment related to assessment goals Top three reasons why topic was chosen Strategies used to utilize technology in the classroom Three New Advances in Computer and Web Technologies Which would benefit K-12 assessments Training Needs Analysis White Paper reflections References

Topic Proposition Will Meet the K-12 Assessment Goals by: Utilizing 7 th Grade Math Formative Assessments Lesson structure will be contingent upon weekly and monthly assessment scores Scores will gauge learning according to skill level and will cater to students with disabilities specifically Content will be studied via computer technologies such as Destination Math and Stanford Math programs Students with disabilities will learn in different ways to Approach learning in unique ways to enhance understanding

Three Issues Related to Assessing Students with disabilities using Computer Technologies  Assistive technologies -Big innovation in helping special needs students  Real World Learning -When students are able to learn outside of the classroom Without assistance is where real world connections take place  Collaborative learning -Teachers utilize other means via technology to enhance Learning outside the box and allow students to succeed In both classroom and life.

Specific Needs of Students  Communication skills  Technology Skills  Social Adaptation  Are challenged when using A computer, but will enhance word recognition And other language lessons  Used to help students with disabilities visualize learning In a different manner and teaches them to be independent in their learning  Students will learn to be social while researching and collaborating as a group to discuss lesson questions and answers

Three Applications related to K- 12 Assessment 1&2. Pearson Access and EPATS – contains web-based assessments that house EPATS. EPATS questions and assessments closely resemble that of state wide testing and enhances testing skills. 3. Destination Math – Online Intervention and assessment Catered to elementary students that benefits students with speech or hearing disabilities. lessons are structured by levels of achievement and content of the Math skills.

Relevance of Assessment related to Assessment Goals 80/90/100 standard via the Shelby County Schools website which gears schools and students towards graduation, career and college ready as well as ACT test ready. Achieving assessment scores that are no lower than 80% will help in meeting goals for the k-12 setting Students scoring Proficient or Advanced on all district-based assessments Students scoring Proficient or Advanced on state wide assessments such as the TCAP for the state of Tennessee When all of these relevant parameters are met assessment goals will be reached for individual students and school.

Key Reasons Why Topic was Chosen United States is a technological society that is growing vastly. Special Needs students have to learn to adapt outside of school as far as education is concerned Technology is important to me!

Strategies used to utilize technology in the classroom Scaffolding on the computer at different levels Creating a Web Quest online of the textbook Instructing students on how to complete multimedia presentations

Three New Advances in Computer and Web Technologies which would benefit K-12 assessments 1) Assistive technologies – Used in the classroom to help students Who may need assistance with taking notes or hearing lectures At their own pace. 2) Internet based lessons - Not a new advancement to technology, but Has been implemented in many new ways. Lessons are being seen and Interacted with more now with the usage of the Smartboard, and Projector technologies. 3). Computer Simulations – By far one of the best new implementations of technology of our time. Simulations changes And challenges the mindset of the learner. Students are more Actively engaged in a different type of learning from the norm. Students perform at different rates when presented with Something new and challenging to the lesson, which in turn Produces turnaround scores in assessments.

Training Needs Analysis Will be used to train educators to teach and utilize Computer Simulations Trainees will be dressed casual Training would be centered in a mobile learning environment Simulations can be as small as the classroom, and as big as the Training room Lessons taught will be taught as whole group but can be used For small group lessons Lessons using simulations will not be taught in just this Manner, but as more of an enhancement to prior and future Skills/concepts taught

White Paper Reflections  I would suggest to the district to implement Computer Simulations. The simulations would create more focus On student centered learning and will help educators See automatic feedback to send learning in a different direction.  This White Paper presented to the district has really Challenged me to think outside of just my own Classroom. I was introduced to many new advancements on technology that would help reach assessment goals for students with disabilities. I never Had a real understanding of helping students with Assessment issues, but the new advancements have helped me see teaching with technology in a new light.  I enjoyed the presentation of this information and I hope I helped someone during my studies.
