Literary Elements

Imagery The forming of mental images, figures, or likeness of things. It is also the use of language to represent actions, persons, objects, and ideas descriptively. This means encompassing the senses also, rather than just forming a mental picture.

Foreshadowing A technique used by authors to provide clues for the reader to be able to predict what might occur later in the story. In other words, it is a literary device in which an author drops subtle hints about plot development to come later in the story.

Diction The author’s choice of words, taking into account correctness, clearness, and effectiveness. There are typically recognized to be four levels of diction: formal, informal, colloquial, and slang.

Characterization The creation of the image of imaginary persons in drama, narrative poetry, the novel and the short story. Characterization generates plot and is revealed by actions, speech, thoughts, physical appearance and other character thoughts or words about him.
