A2 Media Evaluation By Semi Ehigiamusoe

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My Music video follows conventions. I will talk about this through the mise en scene. I will address Location/Setting to show if it fitted the songs media text. Objects and props how they affect the video. What is used to make the video and how they contribute to reinforce the message. The cost of the production. How much we had to pay to make the video possibly and for the equipment we took. The costume of the actors including the hair and make up. Body language and gesture if it is appropriate for that Genre. Lighting and colour to set the mood for the scene Camera is used to show the shots taken and what messages they give out to the audience We used the music video of “Eminem ft. Rihanna love the way you lie” as a template to make our music video. The video shifts back to the present, as the man apologizes to his girlfriend and later drinks a glass of liquor. Rihanna sings, while the couple are reconciled. In another flashback, the man attacks someone who played pool with his girlfriend. After the video returns once again to the present, Eminem joins Rihanna in front of the burning house and raps the final verse. The man follows his girlfriend, who walks away but locks the door to stop him from coming. In a different scene, she handles fire in her hands again and closes them to extinguish the flame. The couple, along with Eminem, are then engulfed by flames. A scene shows them in front of the burning house. In the end the couple remain together and the video returns to the first frame, in which they lie in bed asleep

Location/Setting The location we chose to film was North west London and in the borough Brent. The setting was a place in Willesden. We chose to film in Church road, Denzil road and a graveyard. We chose this location and setting, because it is an estate and we wanted to reinforce the conventions of hip hop. That it shares a social message and it is filmed in the streets of working class people. Objects/Props We did not have any objects in use when we were shooting the video. The props we had was the video camera and tripod. We had a CD player for the music to play. We used a camera and tripod to get still shots for the video. Cost The amount it cost us to make the video was nothing. The reason why so is, because we filmed in our local area. The equipment was taken from our resources as we just borrow the equipment. Costume We tried to make the costume match the genre and conventions of hip hop. We tried clothing our actors in hoodies so they conform to the conventions of hip hop. We did this, because through costume the audience recognise the conventions and media text of that music video Body language and gesture The Gestures should reflect the art of video we are doing. Since we are doing hip hop the hands need to be moving with specific signs to gesture that the film is hip hop. The body language should be out their and open for the audience to clearly make a connection with the artist.

Lighting The lighting we used was nothing really except the sunlight to do our Music video shoot. Lighting is important as it can set the mood for the setting and can change the results of a good music video and a bad. Hip hop tends to be shoot in low key lighting to give the impression its is scary and bad to then reinforce the social message the video is trying to portray Colour Colour sets the mood as well for a music video. It helps you to recognise the conventions easier by showing particular colours like red to represent blood or black to represent hardness. These are the usual colours to represent hip hop as it shows toughness and that it what a person needs to survive Camera The use of the camera is very important in a Music video. The shots you take will tell people the kind of media interpretation your sending out to them. Close up shots are normally used for hip hop videos as it shows the seriousness of the artist.

Comparison to professional music video You can clearly see from the facial expression that these close ups are meant for hip hop videos as it shows the artist expression of the seriousness of the social message, as you can see the music video I made follows professional music videos convention. Eye contact to your audience is very important here The artist and the co-artist standing together in a music video is vital for the audience to recognise they have the same message to share and is iconic for a hip hop video. This follows professionals conventions of hip hop songs This picture shows the artist intentions and trying to get their message across by hand gestures that show boldness and being to the point

This picture represent violence is going to happen. This is typical for rap or hip hop videos some kind of disruption has to occur were two or more people break into a fight This shows the connotation of the music video, as both witness the scene as both the artist are watching what happened as they look at it from a narrative point of view, as standby witnesses and are positioned as the hero in the song This shows the frustration they are having and they anguish they face for their own music video. It is typical for a hip hop song to have some kind of outcry for peace hope for a miracle to happen.

Comparison to professional Digipack Masthead Main Image Advertisement Cover lines Barcode Lead line The difference between my product and the professional one is my product is a magazine, whilst the Professional one is a magazine front cover. Therefore my Magazine has no barcode, but it should have cover lines and lead Line to best represent the artist upcoming events and movements.

Sides Songs Barcode The difference between the Professional Product and mine is the fact the professional one has sides that mention the artist name, which I should have included in for mine. It also has very small writing that say who made the product and who has the copyrights for it, which my product also doesn’t Have but should.

Artist name Artist biography The difference this time between mine and the professional is that the professional one has colour and an amaizing image with high quality Editing done to it, whereas mine is just standard that also has an autobiography of my artist

Follow conventions or does not My product uses the conventions of the genre of hip hop. It does this by having a social message and gives meaning to the people that have to commit crime to live. Having compared it to the professional video we didn’t have the special effects or filming technology to create a high quality video, but nevertheless like the professional one we were able to create some kind of narrative that conform to the idea of hip hop. We didn’t want to challenge the conventions, as we would have to think outside the box. The ancillary text doesn’t quite match up to the professional making of CD covers (front/back) and Magazine advert. It is a good try to make it look like the real thing but in reality it hasn’t got the same standard. What the product does do is conform to the ideals of hip hop as the pictures taken are in black and white and the CD back cover is off an estate which perfectly signifies this.
