Why Education In 1900 the U.K. was the richest and most powerful country in the World In 2015 the U.K. is number 5 in the World. Our Governments do not like this situation.

Education Acts 1870 Compulsory schooling to the age of 1918 school leaving age raised to 14years 1944 Education Act- school leaving age raised to 15. Two types of schools Grammar and Secondary Modern. Selection by 11plus exam 1970 Comprehensive schools introduced nationally 1972 School leaving age raised to National Curriculum introduced This has now been revised three times 2015 School leaving age raised to 18. All must be at school, college or in an apprenticship.

School Types 1. State Schools funded by grants from the Government and local taxes ( Council Tax). Controlled by the LEA and Governors 2. Academies funded direct fro the Government. Controlled by Governors 3. Free Schools set up by local communities and funded by the Government. Controlled by Governors

Ofsted The Government appoints Inspectors of Schools, some are HMIs others are experts in various aspects of education. Schools are inspected and given little warning. Grades are :- Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Special Measures. Ofsted reports are published.

What are Ofsted looking for. Schools should show good progress in pupils learning. Teaching should be good and well structured Exam results should show improvement on previous results The school should be safe and well managed Value for Money Parents should be satisfied with the school
