Open House, Fall 2014

 Following Core Curriculum again this year. ◦ Reading focuses on reading strategies, while Language Arts focuses on grammar and writing. ◦ End of Grade Assessment has now replaced the CRCT– all necessary standards are incorporated. The expectation is that test scores will drop considerably, so be prepared! 7 th graders will also be tested in beginning Oct. 9th for eight days . These include the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the CoGat test. ◦ Units are theme based as opposed to genre based. ◦ I do use BYOD frequently. Please read the rules associated with this privilege. They are posted on my blog. BYOD can be revoked with one rule infraction.

 Students will read one class novel per semester. First novel will be Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. ◦ Students are expected to have a book with them everyday in class.  There are NO reading logs this year. We are working on coming up with a system where students will be awarded points for reading books, short stories and articles. Stay tuned!  I do not assign a lot of homework, but I do expect students to be reading each night. Aim for at least minutes. Most work at home will entail long-term projects related to class novels.  This class will focus on reading strategies for both fiction and non-fiction.

 Students will focus on grammar and writing skills. Practice makes perfect, therefore we will do a lot of writing in here!  Vocabulary books are an important part of the 7 th Grade LA curriculum this year. Please make sure your child has purchased a book. Your child will be tested on every unit and have some kind of outside assignment to do as well.  Homework will usually be assigned if work is not finished in class.  Your child’s Name Essay is due tomorrow!
