Verbs Main/Helping Action/Linking

What is a Verb?  A word or group of words that expresses action or doing.

Action Verbs  Is a word that shows action.  Action verbs tell what someone or something is doing.

 You can identify the action verb in a sentence by asking, “What is the person or thing in the sentence doing?”  Example: Chad jumps rope.  Who is this sentence about?  What is the action they do?

Sarah sings a song.  Who is this sentence about?  What is the action they do?

The magnet pulls the door closed.  What is this sentence about?  What is the action it does?

The rabbit hops away.  What is this sentence about?  What is the action it does?

Action Verbs  Some action verbs tell about actions that are hard to see.

 Examples of these action verbs- wishes, dreams, listens, and enjoys.

Maureen enjoys this book about magnets.  What is the the action verb in this sentence?  Who is the sentence about?  What is the action they do?

The baseball player the ball.  This sentence is not complete.  It is not complete because it does not have a verb!  What word is missing?

The ball over the fence.  Fix the sentence by adding an action verb.

Rose the song.  Fix the sentence by adding an action verb.
