The GMAS Writing Rubric

Types of Questions Constructed Response (short answer) Extended Constructed Response (slightly longer answer) Extended Response (essay length)

Content Weights

The 7-Point Rubric Idea Development Coherence Conventions Organization Idea development, Organization, and Coherence account for 4 out of 7 possible points on the Extended Response essay. Conventions – things like punctuation, spelling, and grammar – account for 3 possible points on the Extended Response Essay

Idea Development, Organization, and Coherence To do well in this area, you must: Establish a controlling topic Support the topic with evidence Elaborate on the topic with examples, illustrations, facts, and other details. Integrate the information from the texts into your own words and arrange the ideas and supporting evidence so that your essay makes sense and holds together.

Conventions To do well in this area, you must Demonstrate control of sentence formation, usage, and mechanics as with respect to the grade-level expectations of the language standards.
