What was the Commercial Revolution? Notes #38
Presentation transcript:

Homework MA #4 due Friday Test on the Middle Ages Wednesday, March 23.

Aim #9: How did the Commercial Revolution change Europe? Do Now:  What were some of the changes that occurred as a result of the Agricultural Revolution?  How did the Agricultural Revolution contribute to the revival of trade in Europe?  How did the revival of trade lead to a commercial revolution?

I. Commercial Revolution (1000s- 1300s) A. The Commercial Revolution will lead to new business practices in Europe that lay the foundations of modern day capitalism (see handout). 

I. Commercial Revolution B. Merchants who set up a new town would ask a local lord, and if possible the king himself, for a charter. In return, the merchants paid the lord or king a yearly fee.

A. Townspeople are willing to pay taxes to the king to gain protection and a charter B. King can now afford to hire soldiers – does not have to depend on lords to supply fighting men C. Power of kings increases, power of lords decreases – feudalism starts to decline II. Influence of Towns on the Monarchy

Assignment Write your own charter for a Medieval town. As you do this, consider the following issues: 1. What will be the name of your town? 2. How big may the town grow? 3. May town leaders punish criminals? 4. What rights will the following groups have: merchants, the clergy, runaway serfs, shop owners, weavers 5. What will the town give the king in return for the charter? 6. How will the town be governed?
