2. Aim #1: What factors allowed the Byzantine Empire to succeed during the Middle Ages?
Do Now: After Emperors Diocletian and Constantine divided the Roman Empire into Eastern and Western portions, how did the development of those regions differ in the centuries that followed?

3. I. Introduction
In 285, Roman Emperor Diocletian divided the Roman Empire into Eastern and Western portions. The West fell in 476. But the East continued on for 1,000 years as The Byzantine Empire.

4. II. Geography
Byzantine Empire controlled territory in Eastern Europe, North Africa and parts of the Middle East (present day Greece, the Balkans, Turkey, Egypt and Syria).
Had many of the same geographical advantages as the Roman Empire. What were some of them?
