Latin American Revolutions Warm up: Label page 42, Latin American Revolutions What events have we learned about this year that would influence the Latin American Independence movements?

Latin American social classes. Peninsulares- people who were born in Spain. They could only hold high government positions. Creoles- Spaniards born in Latin America. Mestizos- persons of mixed European and Indian ancestry Mulattos-persons of mixed European and African ancestry Enslaved Africans Native Americans/indigenous people In colonial Latin America, social classes decided people’s place in society and their jobs.

Haitian Revolution Toussaint L’Ouverture was a former slave in Haiti. When the French Revolution broke out, enslaved persons in Haiti decided to rebel against their French owners. L’Ouverture’s uprising ended slavery in Haiti and later Haiti became the first black colony to free itself from European control.

Simon Bolivar Creoles in Latin America decided to move toward independence due to influence from the American Revolution and the Enlightenment. Simon Bolivar was a creole from Venezuela and became the general of the volunteer army of revolutionaries. He was know as “The Liberator”

Jose’ de San Martin Jose’ de San Martin led Argentina and Chile to independence. San Martin’s army joined Bolivar’s army and defeated the Spanish for independence throughout Latin America.

Gran Colombia Bolivar and San Martin wanted a united Latin America. The countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, and Ecuador were to become Gran Colombia. Because of political differences and mountainous terrain, Gran Colombia was unsuccessful.

Mexico ends Spanish rule Indians and mestizos led the independence movement in Mexico. Padre Miguel Hidalgo began the fight for independence.
