Education History Before 1870: Education was VOLUNTARY. 1880: 1 st Education act. Education = compulsory 1944: ANOTHER education act, Education = free 1988: National Curriculum introduced
A new law in 1880 said all children had to go to school There could be as many as 70 or 80 pupils in a class, especially in cities. Teachers were very strict. Children had to behave well all the time. Naughty children were punished by being: beaten with a cane; beaten with a birch made of thin twigs; made to stand on a stool wearing a dunce's hat 1880 – Change in Education
1944 – Free for all!!! Education was compulsory up to 16yrs old. Education became free up to the age of 16. New opportunities after the devastation of the war. Class sizes were smaller, students. Still punished and humiliated.
1988 – modern education The comprehensive school established National curriculum introduced Class sizes between More qualified teaches inc. Men State schools are less strict No form of physical punishment
