Opening Assignment Have your Syllabus on your desk with the signature page facing up. Pick up a copy of the article “Why Study History?” and read independently. You have 15 minutes to read the article. While reading pick out one paragraph or reason supporting the study of history that you think is well justified. Be ready to discuss these reasons as a whole class.

Why Study History? What are some reasons that Mr. Stearns lists for studying history? How has history been used in the past? Why should history be studied? Page 1 paragraph 4. How does history offer us evidence to support our understanding of People & Societies? Mr. Stearns suggests that to understand the present and predict the future one must rely upon what knowledge?

Why Study History? How can history be important to us in our own lives? How does history contribute to our understanding of morality? In what ways does history provide identity? How does the study of history help build good citizens? What are the three types of skills that students of history can develop? Which of these skills is most essential in your opinion? Why? How can history help you in your future profession? Mr. Stearns suggests in his closing that history is essential, what is his rationale?

Essay Instructions You will write a 500 word essay starting today in class and finishing at home this evening. You will make an argument for the study of history and will use quotes from the article as evidence to support your position. You should also use your own experience and thoughts to shape your argument. The essay should be single spaced, Times New Roman font.You will your essay to me at schools.org before school tomorrow or print the essay and turn in at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Grading This is an essay assignment (25% of Q1 Grade) and will be graded using the rubric on the last page of your handouts. You should use the remaining time to plan/outline your essay and if time allows begin writing.
