Science Project Assignment #1

Handouts Parent Letter Assignment Due Dates Project Requirements How to do a Science Project booklet

January 8, 2016 Dear Parents and Science Students, It is that time of year in which students will put their scientific knowledge to use on their own science projects. The project will take students through six steps of Scientific Method just as professional scientists. They will have to begin with some type of problem, research it, develop an hypothesis, design an experiment, conduct an experiment and record data, and draw a conclusion which will either conform or rebut their hypothesis. Students will have approximately three months to complete this and they will have an assignment due each week that shows the progress they have made. Fridays will be saved for discussing their progress individually and guiding them in the successful completion of this valuable exercise. On the attached sheet are due dates and requirements. Please go over these with your child as NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE ACCEPTED. Your child has received a copy of these dates, which are to remain in their folder. The students’ project sheet also includes guidelines for sources on note cards and a sample works cited page. Please sign and have your child sign and return this entire informational sheet as these due dates are extremely important. Please keep the list of due dates on your refrigerator at home. If you would like a copy of this letter to keep for your records, please initial in the appropriate place below. Because your child may have chosen to do this as a group project, students may encounter problems with their partners. PLEASE ADVISE ME IMMEDIATELY of any problems. I will NOT be able to resolve the problems if I am not notified until April. Please ask your child to produce the assignment that is due each week for your review. This is not a project where students do PARTS of the project. If they are working in a group, they are ALL to do ALL the work. All handouts are posted on my website Look for the Science Project link in the left navigation panel. Thank you for your time and good luck to all. I’m looking forward to seeing these innovative projects. There will be a science fair at the end of the project for students to showcase their knowledge to their parents. I will need help with organizing this fair. If you wish to volunteer your time, please sign in the appropriate place below & provide me a daytime phone number or your address. Dr. Laura Jernigan 7 th Grade Science
