Putting the “E” in STEM MSP Title IIB STEM Grant

The ideal engineer is a composite... He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems. N. W. Dougherty

Engineers In your group, try to list as many types of engineers as you can WITHOUT using the internet. Extra credit – Draw a picture of an engineer

Definition of an Engineer Your team is tasked with coming up with a definition for “engineer” for the Webster’s Dictionary. As a team, write a definition to explain what an Engineer is.

From Georgia Tech Engineering is the practical application of science and math to solve problems, and it is everywhere in the world around you. From the start to the end of each day, engineering technologies improve the ways that we communicate, work, travel, stay healthy, and entertain ourselves.

From Wikipedia Engineering is the discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying technical, scientific, and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.

From Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering The field of engineering has become so diverse in recent years that a definition is not easy to come by. Yes, engineers still build skyscrapers, design machinery, and oversee public works. But that's only the beginning. They also address society's needs and problems on a number of other scales with a unique blend of technology and science. At the atomic level, materials engineers are developing data storage techniques focusing on the spin of electrons in atoms. At the molecular level, chemical and bioengineers are working on drug delivery systems that work inside cells. At the macro level, environmental engineers are quantifying the particle flow of pollutants through soil to better understand how to clean up abandoned industrial sites, oil spills, and other biohazards. And at the galactic level, astronautical engineers are designing spacecraft for other-world exploration.

Webster's Dictionary a person who has scientific training and who designs and builds complicated products, machines, systems, or structures : a person who specializes in a branch of engineering

Scientific Method vs. Engineering Process The Scientific Method The Engineering Design Process State your questionDefine the problem Do background research Formulate your hypothesis, identify variables Specify requirements Design experiment, establish procedureCreate alternative solutions, choose the best one and develop it Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment Build a prototype Analyze your results and draw conclusionsTest and redesign as necessary Communicate results

Ask a Question Do Background Research Construct a Hypothesis Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion Communicate Your Results Define the Problem Do Background Research Specify Requirements Create Alternative Solutions Choose the Best Solution Do Development Work Build a Prototype Test and Redesign

Why are there two processes? Both scientists and engineers contribute to the world of human knowledge, but in different ways. Scientists use the scientific method to make testable explanations and predictions about the world. A scientist asks a question and develops an experiment, or set of experiments, to answer that question. Engineers use the engineering design process to create solutions to problems. An engineer identifies a specific need: Who need(s) what because why? And then, he or she creates a solution that meets the need.

The scientists seeks to understand what is; The engineer seeks to create what never was. -attributed to: Theodore von Karman

A scientist can discover a new star but he cannot make one. He would have to ask an engineer to do it for him.
