Ellie’s Medicine

‘ Guess what?’ says Ellie. ‘While I was ill I found out where medicines come from. It’s amazing!’ Ram wants to hear all about it, so Ellie tells her story….. Ellie has been poorly and has just come back to school. Her best friend Ram is very pleased to see her.

Ellie felt very poorly. Her head hurt. Her throat hurt. She felt hot all over

Tucked up snugly in her bed, Ellie hoped she would feel better tomorrow. If not, she might need some medicine. Soon she was fast asleep and dreaming …

Ellie dreamt she was at the doctor’s. Dr William smiled at her. He looked in her ears and felt her neck. He looked at her very sore throat while Ellie said ‘Aaaah!’

‘Poor Ellie! You’ve got tonsillitis,’ said the doctor. ‘I’ll give you some medicine to help you get better.’ ‘Thank you’ said Ellie ‘But where does my medicine come from?’ ‘Try the pharmacist!’ smiled Dr William …

In her dream, Ellie visited Neela at the pharmacy. There were lots of things to look at! Neela mixed Ellie’s medicine in a special bottle. ‘Thank you’ said Ellie ‘But where does my medicine come from?’ ‘Fred brings it in his lorry’ answered Neela with a smile.

Ellie looked up and up into the lorry cab. ‘Can you tell me where my medicine comes from?’ she asked Fred. ‘I get it from the medicines factory. It’s a long way away and very, very big!’ said Fred

Ellie saw a huge machine putting yellow powder into bottles. ‘That’s your medicine’ said Mr Edward, who looks after the factory. ‘We make tonnes of it here!’ ‘Thank you’ said Ellie politely ‘But where does my medicine REALLY come from?’ ‘Ah’ said Mr Edward ‘ You need to talk to the doctors at the medicines company…’

‘We are testing a new medicine,’ said Dr Felix. ‘We try to make sure it works well and is safe to use by giving it to some of our patients,’ added Dr Sarah. ‘George has tried this one for us’ ‘Yes, and I’m feeling much better now.’ said George ‘Thank you,’ said Ellie ‘But I’m still not sure where my medicine comes from.’ ‘Talk to our company scientists!’ smiled the doctors.

‘We do thousands of tests on every new medicine’ said Dr James, busy in the laboratory. ‘We have to answer two big questions - will it make you better and is it safe?’ ‘Thank you,’ said Ellie ‘But I’m still not sure – WHERE does my medicine come from?’ ‘You need our research team’ grinned Dr James. ‘Off you go …’

‘The ideas for some of our best medicines come from plants, fungi and bacteria!’ Ellie peeped out in surprise from some enormous leaves. What a strange dream she was having! ‘I’m looking for living things which might make people better,’ said Thomas, a rather special scientist.

Ellie blinked – and the plants had gone. She was back in a laboratory. Patrick and Yasmin were busy testing chemicals to see if any of them might make a good medicine. Ellie thought they looked VERY busy! Another blink and..

..she was looking at a computer! Anna uses computers to help find out which chemicals will make the best medicines. ‘All new medicines start off with people like Patrick, Thomas, Yasmin and me’ she explained. ‘Oh thank you!’ cried Ellie ‘Now I know the answer to my question…’

When Ellie woke up, her head and throat still hurt. She STILL felt poorly. ‘No school for you today!’ said Ellie’s Mum and she took Ellie straight to the doctor’s.

Doctor William smiled at Ellie. He looked in her ears and felt her neck. He looked at her very sore throat while Ellie said ‘Aaaah!’

‘ Poor Ellie! You’ve got tonsillitis’ said the doctor ‘I’ll give you some medicine to help you get better.’ ‘Thank you’ said Ellie ‘And do you know what? I know EXACTLY where it comes from!!’

‘Wow!’ said Ram ‘That’s amazing! I wonder what else we can find out about medicines?’ ‘Come on’ says Ellie ‘Let’s go and see….!’ go to “Our Battle Against Bacteria”
