What is ASL? The shape, placement, and movement of the hands, as well as facial expressions and body movements, all play important parts in conveying information. Time topic comment structure Does not use article words A language borrowed from France and developed in America. Has grammar (facial morphemes) Used in the US and Canada but no where else. All other countries have their own sign language. EX: JSL Japanese sign language Fingerspelling is for use only when you are: spelling names of people, brand names, and places without a sign name.

Deaf Culture consists of what? Eye contact 90/10 rule Deaf with a capital D Being blunt Collectivist not individualist Hearing aids and cochlear implants Sign names Oppression DPN/Gallaudet

Deaf schools Information: Mainstream/public schools Deaf sign language primary Deaf oral method primary “1 st deaf school in America”: American Asylum for the education of deaf and dumb persons. First opened 1817 in Connecticut. By L. Clerc and Gallaudet. Milan congress and Cochlear implants are what have made oral methods popular in use from then to today.

Eye Contact Focus on the signer’s face When you look away from a signer, you appear bored. Eye contact and nodding show interest and understanding of the topic. People can walk through a conversation without stopping it If they lipread, clear speaking and constant eye contact is a must Starring and pointing at one another is fully acceptable in the language/culture.

How to properly sign Time Topic comment For example: "WEEK-PAST ME WASH CAR " or "WEEK-PAST CAR WASH ME " What it doesn't use is "subject" + "be-verb" + "object." For example, in ASL you wouldn't sign the "is" in "HE IS MY BROTHER." You'd simply sign "HE MY BROTHER" ASL is a subject-verb-object (SVO) languagesubject-verb-object Example: She loves him.

Deaf President Now (DPN) was a student protest in March 1988 at Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. The university, established by an act of Congress in 1864 to serve the Deaf, had always been led by a hearing president. The protest began on March 6, 1988, when the Board of Trustees announced its decision to appoint a hearing person as its seventh president. [1][2]Gallaudet UniversityWashington, D.C.CongressDeaf [1][2] Gallaudet students, backed by a number of alumni, staff, and faculty, shut down the campus. Protesters barricaded gates, burned effigies, and gave interviews to the press demanding four specific concessions from the Board. The protest ended on March 13, 1988, with the appointment of I. King Jordan, a deaf person, as university president.alumnifacultyI. King Jordan In short, DPN was about getting a Deaf president for the first time in the schools history.
