3 Definition of American Sign Language ASL is: an organic visual-gestural language with its own grammar and syntax that is separate and distinct from English. It is the primary language of Deaf adults throughout North America.

5 The 5 Parameters of ASL Handshape: over 45 different finger configurations Palm Orientation: the direction your hand is facing Location: placement in relation to the signer’s body Movement: varying direction or repetition can communicate action or description Facial Expression: some signs require non-manual signals to show their full meaning
