1.Learn to think in ASL. 2.There isn’t a sign for every English word but there is a way to express the concept/ Idea- there are many English words which do not have an “English sign equivalent”.

3.When you mouth the words or sign in English order, You are NOT signing ASL 4. The only time Deaf people sign and mouth English words at the same time is when they choose to sign in English. Most of the time they do this when the other signer is not proficient in ASL.

5. There are other sign systems, but only ASL is a true language. 6. If you don’t use ASL “syntax”(the way signs are ordered in a sentence) AND facial expressions, then you are NOT signing ASL.

1.Fingerspell with your dominant hand. 2.Keep you arm/elbow comfortably at your side. 3.Your hand will be to the side of your face. 4.Being clear is vital to being understood.

1.Don’t switch hands during conversation- it’s too confusing (and sloppy) 2.Don’t bounce, travel, or thrust your hand. 3.Don’t sign with your hand in front of your face. 4.Don’t use fingerspelling as a substitute for a sign you don’t know (A..R..E…Y..O..U…G..O..I..N..G)

Double letters are made in 3 ways, deaf tend to choose the way that flows best A quick repetition of the letter. Only the letters A, D, E, F, M, N, O, S, AND T (Patty) can be signed with this method (on the letter “A” your thumb doesn’t move). Double movement used with the letters B, C, G, K, L, P, R, U and X (PEPPER)

Move slightly to the right or left depending on which is your dominant hand Correcting Mistakes 1.When you make a mistake fs, use “wave no” or shake your head. 2.You must spell the entire word again.

1.Names of people 2.Names of places 3.Titles of movies, books and Magazines 4.Certain foods 5.For clarification when a sign has several meanings (ex. Coach, dean, boss; foster, fake) 6.Medical and technical terms

1.Look at fingerspelling as a whole word not individual letters 2. Don’t mouth the letters when you are fingerspelling or when you are reading fs 3.Try to sound it out in your head

4. Try to guess the word based on what you DID understand 5.Look at the signer’s face not their hands 6.Practice, practice, practice http://asl.ms/Practice, practice, practice http://asl.ms/

1.Sign the numbers 1-5 palm toward the body unless signing phone number, address or a group of numbers in a series 2.Sign the numbers 11 and 12 from the “S” handshape with a flicking motion 3.The numbers 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 are ALWAYS signed toward the body.

4. The numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9 are ALWAYS signed away from the body
