WHAT IS NEPAD? NEPAD - New Partnership for Africa’s Development, is an initiative of African Heads of State under the auspices of the African Union (AU). Its primary objectives are to: (i) Eradicate poverty; (ii) Promote Sustainable Growth and Development; (iii) Integrate Africa in the world economy; and (iv) Accelerate the Empowerment of Youth and Women. 3

NEPAD PROGRAMMES NEPAD manages a number of programs and projects in some thematic areas. These thematic areas are: -Agriculture and Food Security (Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme - CAADP) -Climate Change and National Resource Management; -Regional Integration and Infrastructure; -ICT (Nepad E-schools). - Human Development (Fellowship Programme) - Gender Development A key initiative of NEPAD is the Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). 4

WHAT IS APRM? APRM is the Africa Peer Review Mechanism It is a Voluntary Governance “Self-Assessment” by African countries It was agreed upon by African Union under NEPAD and adopted in 2003 So far 34 countries have acceded to the APRM. Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Mauritius were the First 4 to pioneer the process. 5

Good Governance The term governance signifies an impression of a shared responsibility of representatives from the state, the market and civil society dealing with social problems of its country. The extent to which a governance system can be regarded as ‘good’ or ‘weak’ depends on whether or not the five key principles of good governance are explicit in every decision- making process that affects the livelihoods of stakeholders. These are; Openness, Participation, Accountability, Effectiveness and Coherence

Sustainable Development Sustainability can be defined as an institutionalised process of adaptive change in which innovation is a necessary element; a protection of amenities and creation of new and better ways of people to require innovation in institution of governance systems. Sustainable development is therefore a process or method of structuring our thinking our decisions and our actions, in order to ensure that we achieve the inherent principles and values of good governance.

The Role of Good Governance in Sustainable Development Helps in achieving Development results; Open and transparency opportunities; ensuring accountability through the capacity to monitor and enforce rules and to regulate economic activities in the public interest; Effective governing institutions that deliver reliable and quality services; Policy making which brings forth an interconnected objective of a cross sectoral approach on economic and social growth; Promotes mobilisation of a relevant stakeholders both public and private investors;

The Role of Good Governance in Sustainable Development (Cont…) Enables exchange of best practices, innovation becoming a shared sense of responsibility; Adopts a commitment from leadership which is effectively communicated across sectors of government;

Good Governance Challenges for Sustainable Development Conflict over natural resources ; threat of resource depletion and dislocation; achieving equitable distribution of resources and energy. Effects of climate change Natural disasters
