 This unit is designed to introduce students to the seven themes in 6 th Grade Social Studies.  Activities will focus on conflict and change, culture, governance, human environmental interactions, location, production, distribution and consumption, time, change and continuity.  At the conclusion of this unit students should demonstrate effective use of the enduring understandings and can apply the enduring understandings to their lives and to prior knowledge.

Conflict & Change When there is conflict between or within societies, change is the result.

Time, Change, Continuity While change occurs over time, there is continuity to the basic structure of a society.

Governance As a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of the government also increases.

Production, Distribution, Consumption The production, distribution, and consumption of goods/services produced by the society are affected by the location, customs, beliefs, and laws of the society.

Human Environmental Interaction Humans, their society, and the environment affect each other.

Location Location affects a society’s economy, culture, and development.

Culture The culture of a society is the product of the religion, beliefs, customs, traditions, and government of that society.

Movement/ Migration The movement or migration of people and ideas affects all societies involved.

 How many of you have lived in another city, state, or country?  Why did your family move?  Were there any differences or similarities in the locations?  Movement and Migration: The movement of people from one country or region to another in order to make a new home.

Something New This Way Comes Just as jeans have changed over time, so, too, has American culture. Cultures change all the time. Because culture is a total way of life, a change in one part changes other parts. Changes in the natural environment, technology, and new ideas affect culture and every aspect of our world.

 Now that we are experts on the major themes of sixth grade social studies… perhaps a is needed!!!  BUT… we’ll save that for later.  Now for some closing remarks.
