Overview of 11 th Grade Class Visits September  Grades/Transcripts  Practice College Entrance Exams  Extracurricular Activities  Begin College Searches  Understanding College Requirements  Resume writing  Community Service  Summer Programs like TN Governor’s School

Important Dates  September – Classroom Visits  Sept. 29 th – College Fair at Hardin Valley Academy at 6:30PM  Oct. 12 th - 13 th –Fall Break  Oct. 14 th – PSAT—Fee is $20. Students must sign up in the Counseling Office by October 1 st !  October 24 th - ACT  Nov. 26 th -28 th – Thanksgiving  December 12 th - ACT

ACT and SAT  ACT– start taking during fall or spring of Junior year  You will get a voucher for 1 free ACT from me during Junior year  4 components: English, Math, Reading, Science (optional Writing)  Each section scored 1-36  $39.50 ($56.50 with Writing)  SAT – start taking during fall or spring of Junior year  Changes coming…  3 components: Reading, Writing/Language, Math (optional Writing)  No penalty for guessing  Scored from  $43.00 ($54.50 with Writing)

What Colleges Look For:  Grade Point Average  ACT or SAT Scores  Rigor of Courses Taken in High School  Extracurricular Activities in High School  Community Service and Summer Programs  Teacher Recommendation Letters  Awards and Achievements in High School JUNIORS GET 2 EXCUSED COLLEGE VISIT DAYS!!! USE THEM!!!

University of Tennessee  The freshmen admitted to UTK in the Fall of 2014 had an average high school GPA of 3.8 and an average ACT composite score of 27.

Hope Scholarship and TN Promise TN Promise—  2 years of tuition-free community or technical college  Currently no GPA or test score requirements  Requires application and community service HOPE Scholarship—  3.0 unweighted GPA or 21 or higher on ACT  $1,750 per semester for 4—year colleges  Goes up to $2,250 per semester junior and senior year.  $1, 500 per semester for 2—year colleges

TN Governor’s School  6 Week Summer Residential Program on 8 different college campuses.  12 Programs including Fine Arts  The brightest and most talented 10 th and 11 th grade TN High School students.  Application process includes essays, teacher recommendations, counselor recommendations, transcript, and PLAN or PSAT scores.  Applications available on-line at TN.gov and due in Counseling Office in December.

Student Support  Parent Portal  Contact Teachers via –information & tutoring  Extended Learning Center –after school tutoring in the library by teacher referral.  Parent/Teacher Conferences – call Counseling Office at  Recovery Credit  Learning Center during school –counselor referral only (seats are limited).
