IT’S RELEVANCE TODAY BILL OF RIGHTS (AND CONSTITUTION)

MOST VITAL COMPONENTS What part of the Bill of Rights or organization of the Constitution do you find most vital? 1 st Amendment (Freedom of Speech, Religion, Press, Petition 2 nd Amendment (Right to Bear Arms) 8 th Amendment (No Cruel and Unusual Punishment)

THE MODERN BILL OF RIGHTS Is there anything that you think should be altered within the Bill of rights to fit modern times? It was produced over 200 years ago. What might you alter? ex: 2 nd amendment, police and military have weapons therefore citizens have no reason to have them.

ADDITION TO OUR RIGHTS With a focus on the rights of the people from government: 3 rd Amendment: Forbids peacetime quartering of soldiers in domestic homes. Posse Comitatus Act of 1878: Forbids the federal government from employing military personnel to enforce U.S. domestic law The National Security Act of 1947: Prohibits intelligence agencies from targeting American citizens. This established the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), explicitly prohibited the agency from having “police, subpoena, law enforcement powers, or internal security functions” Post-Watergate reforms: required special court authorizations for surveillance of U.S. citizens

EDWARD SNOWDEN

STATS

WRITS OF ASSISTANCE These were warrants issued by King George III to authorize general searches of colonists Agents of the King could search a suspect or a suspect’s home and documents at will. These types of investigations were one of the major complaints of the Founding Fathers.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS, QUESTION 5 In at least one paragraph or more discuss what problems the Snowden / NSA leak case presented for a country like ours? Since our founding, one of the main objectives of U.S. law has been preserving our rights. How do we preserve our rights but at the same time protect ourselves from outside threats? Can both of these be accomplished at the same time?
