Measurement Metric Units and Tools

Metric System  International system of measurement  Based on the number 10 (decimal system)

Length  Basic unit of length is the meter (m)  Basic tool is the meter stick  Be sure that you use the proper line of sight

Volume  the amount of space occupied by an object  Basic unit is the liter (L)  Graduated cylinder is often used to measure liquid volume  Displacement is a common method of measurement

Mass  Amount of matter  Not the weight (depends upon gravity)  Basic unit is grams (g)  Balance is often used to measure mass

Temperature  Unit of measurement is Celsius  Tool used is the thermometer  Freezing point is zero degrees Celsius  Boiling point is 100 degrees Celsius

Density  The amount of mass in a given volume  What weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?  Density of water is 1g/mL  Formula D=M/V
