1 Independent or Dependent?
Properties of Matter Independent or Dependent?

2 Properties of matter Mass Volume Density Melting Point Boiling Point
Solubility Weight

3 Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object
It is measured in grams using a balance

4 Volume Volume is the amount of space occupied by a liquid, solid or gas Volume is measured in milliliters (liquid) or cubic meters (solids) If you are measuring the volume of a cube you can multiply the length, width and height If you are measuring the volume of a liquid you can use a graduated cylinder If you are measuring the volume of an irregular solid you can drop it into the graduated cylinder to measure how much liquid is displaced

5 Density Density is the measure of how compact a substance is or how tightly packed its atoms are Density of a solid is measured in grams per cubic centimeter and density of a liquid is measured in grams per cubic millimeter The formula for calculating density is mass/volume

6 Melting Point The melting point of a solid is the temperature at which the solid changes to a liquid The melting point of frozen water is 0 degrees Celsius

7 Boiling Point The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which that liquid begins to change into vapor (gas) The boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius

8 Solubility Solubility is the ability if a substance to dissolve
An example of a solute would be sugar and the solvent would be water Solids are not the only thing that can dissolve. Gases can dissolve in liquids and liquids can even dissolve in other liquids.

9 Weight Weight is the heaviness of an object and depends on the amount of gravity that is attracting the object towards the earth or any other celestial body For example- A rock might weight 20 pounds on earth but only 3.32 pounds on the moon because there is less gravity on the moon

10 Independent vs Dependent Properties
Mass Volume Density Melting Point Boiling Point Solubility Weight Some properties of matter are Independent It doesn’t make any difference how much matter is present, that property will stay the same Some properties of matter are dependent upon the amount of matter present If I add more matter that property will increase If I remove matter that property will decrease

11 What do you think? Independent Dependent Mass Volume Density
Melting Point Boiling Point Solubility Weight Independent Dependent

12 Conclusions Independent Dependent
