THIS IS NOT A FIRST AID COURSE! Awareness Only (Knowing what to do and when) Keeping Yourself and Others Safe! (Number 1 Priority at all times) Getting the right help is the objective (Dialing 111 from mobiles) ©ERTS®

What is First Aid? First Aid is the immediate care given to a victim of injury or sudden illness until more advanced care can be provided. ©ERTS®

How many people live in NZ? 5 million How many Ambo’s do we have in NZ? 2500 In NZ, what is the survival rate of a heart attack on the street? 7% In NZ what is the survival rate of a heart attack in a hospital? 33% Current knowledge of CPR in community is about…… ©ERTS® 4%

So why don’t more people learn First Aid? ©ERTS® Scared of failing / performing Lack of time / money Fear of legal repercussions Don’t want to get involved Communicable diseases

The Three P’s P RESERVE LIFE P REVENT DETERIORATION P ROMOTE RECOVERY ©ERTS®

Action at an Emergency A C T Quickly Calmly Correctly ©ERTS®

How many people in the picture and who would you attend to first and why?

Are there any Dangers? 1. Traffic (including people) 2. Fire 3. Electricity (fallen power lines) 4. Fuel or chemical spillage 5. Gas 6. Bad weather 7. Unstable Structures ©ERTS®

Calling for Help Dial Nature of Call – e.g. Road Traffic Crash, Not Breathing, etc. 2. Your EXACT Location 3. Telephone Number you are calling from 4. Your Name 5. Any Special Aids needed? – e.g. Fire, Police. ALWAYS HANG UP LAST! ©ERTS®

“Where Does it Hurt?” ©ERTS® If you are going to assist further by touching the patient then you MUST do this! ASK BEFORE YOU TOUCH! EXPLAIN YOUR ACTIONS

What do these letters mean? S.R.A.B.C. (BASIC FIRST AID SKILL TAUGHT AT ALL LEVELS) ©ERTS®

First Things First! Safety - To Whom? Response – Conscious or unconscious? Airway – Clear and open? Breathing – Can you Hear or See it? Circulation – Are they Pink or Pale? Bleeding – Stop the bleeding thing! Shock – Expect it every time! ©ERTS®

How do we check for Consciousness? We use the ‘COWS’ technique! (also called a Primary Survey)

C.O.W.S. = C an you hear me? O pen your eyes W hat’s your name? S queeze my hands ©ERTS®

Now It’s Your Turn! In pairs perform primary survey on each other ©ERTS®

C.O.W.S. C an you hear me? O pen your eyes W hat’s your name? S queeze my hands ©ERTS®

If you get a response, what to do now??? Given that your patient could go unconscious at any time, what do you think would be the next most important question to ask, other than their name? How should it be recorded so that you can maximize the info you collect? What do the Ambo’s need from you as soon as they arrive on scene? ©ERTS®

A. M. P. L. E. Are you allergic to anything? ©ERTS® Are you taking any medication at present? Do you have any previous medical history? Do you remember what happened - the event? When did you last eat and last see your doctor? A M P L E

Reviewing Your Action Plan YOUR Safety is #1 Determine Priorities S.R.A.B.C. / A.M.P.L.E. Multiple Casualties Utilise By-Standers Calling for Help - When? ©ERTS®

OK So what do you do first? Call for help OR treat the patient? It’s YOUR Call First Aider It’s Up to YOU YOU will have to decide what comes first based on the resources available

Is the victim breathing? YES But they are unconscious! If safe, use the recovery position Telephone for help (111) Re-assess at intervals (5 min) Check for bleeding and STOP it ©ERTS®

Recovery Position 1st Stage

Recovery Position 2nd Stage

Recovery Position 3rd Stage

Recovery Position 4th Stage ©ERTS®

Circulation - Bleeding Look for any external signs of bleeding Check for a pulse (if trained) on wrist Take note of skin colour (Lips or Nails) Stemming the flow of bleeding will assist in the treatment of shock. Allow Paramedics to see how much blood loss has occurred. DON’T FORGET TO WEAR GLOVES! ©ERTS®

Shock is a Killer! ©ERTS® A person may die without a mark on them! Expect Shock in all Emergencies Shock is caused by fluid loss Keeping a person warm and calm Never give them anything to eat or drink

Training Summary ABC of basic First Aid:  Calling for Help (What Numbers?)  Safety of everyone concerned! (Who)  Recovery Position (On Their Side)  Bleeding (Internally or Externally)  Shock (Life-threatening condition) ©ERTS®
