1 In the Event of an Accident,by Law You Must  YOU MUST STOP if involved in an accident  You must give your name and address and registration number to anyone involved in the accident who requests it  Details of the owner of the vehicle if not your own  If any one or thing has been injured-must be reported in person to the police and in any case within 24 hours

2 When Do the Police Have to Be Contacted ?  You do not need to contact the police when  Damage only road traffic accident  No injury has been caused to anyone or animal e.g live stock,dog etc.  All parties concerned have exchanged full details  Contact the police if  Someone fails to stop  Refuses to exchange details or leaves the scene before doing so  If someone has been hurt  If the accident is serious  If you feel someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol  You suspect a driver is guilty of dangerous of careless driving

3 What you should write down at the scene  Names and addresses  Make of cars and reg numbers  Insurance details  Damage to vehicles  Injuries  Road and weather conditions  Details of vehicles i.e condition,were its lights on etc  I.D numbers of the police involved

4 Actions to Be Taken in the Event of an Accident  Ensure your own safety  Try to make the area as safe as possilbe i.e. switch off engines,no smoking,set up warning triangle,switch on hazard warning lights (protect the accident scene)  Stabilise vehicles i.e. put handbrake on and put in gear.Do not attempt to right a vehicle on its side  LOOK OUT FOR PHYSICAL DANGERS  Attend to the casualties i.e consciousness, breathing, bleeding. Call the emergency services if required.

6 Introduction to First Aid  First Aid is the early help or treatment given to a casualty of an accident or sudden illness before the arrival of an ambulance, doctor or other qualified person.  The Principles Of First Aid are – To Preserve life – To Prevent the condition worsening – To Promote recovery.  Priorities in first aid – in order to manage situations correctly and to fulfil the principles of first aid, it is necessary to understand the concept (idea) of the priorities of treatment ( what you should do first). This can be remembered by DRABC  Danger – is it safe for yourself, the casualty and others?  Response – assessing the casualty level of response and consciousness?  Airway – ensuring the patient has a clear and open airway?  Breathing – is the casualty breathing?  Circulation – is the casualty heart beating?  If the above are correct, you can then check for other injuries.

7 Applying First Aid  Is he/she conscious-YES- assess injuries call 999 if needed  NO- gently tilt head back to open airway remove any obstructions,are they breathing?  NO - call 999 START CPR ONLY IF QUALIFIED TO  YES - place them in the recovery position call 999

8 Emergency First Aid –Severe Blood Loss (Haemorrhage)  In the case of bleeding  Put on disposable gloves if available  Apply direct pressure over the wound with a clean dressing or pad  Lay the casualty down and raise the injured limb above the level of the heart if possible, secure the dressing, call 999  Watch for signs of shock
