MODULE 3 TEACHING IN THE 21 ST CENTURY By Luis Eduardo Montemayor

Mission Statement  My mission is to help teachers incorporate multimedia technology in their every day activities so that they can prepare our students to be successful in the 21st century.  My mission is to guide and challenge students to be problem solvers, life long learners and to enhance communication skills through the use of technology.

21 st Century Student Characteristics

21 st Century Students  Technology Natives  Technology is 1 st language  Have grown up surrounded by technology such as computers, cell phones, internet, portable electronic devices, high speed cable, and scanners.  Have My Space, Face book, Twitter, Blogs, Glogs, You Tube, and Texting at their finger tips.

Challenges & Limitations  Equipment  Staff Development and Training  Lack of desire to change and learn new ways  Funding  Personnel/Support  Proper Software/Programs  Technology used for administrative purposes

What we have…

Muñoz Elementary  2 Computer Labs  4 Student Computers/classroom  13 out of 25 have Smart Boards  21 out of 25 Elmos and Projectors  9 video cameras and digital cameras  2 sets of clickers  Varied software/programs

Today’s Student

What We Need To Do  Provide Staff Development/Training on how to integrate technology in the daily lessons  Change teaching styles and expectations not layering  Implement Web Tools aligned with 21 st century student skills  Student collaboration  Integrate Technology to Change End Products and Expectations

Teachers can only teach using the tools and methods that they have received training on. Teachers need to be trained to use today’s technology as an integral part of teaching and learning.
