1 st African Regional Targeted Workshop for GEF IW Projects held at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa from 2 nd to 4 th April 2012

GEF Project Details Project Title: Lake Tanganyika Integrated Management Project (LTIMP) Location: Mpulungu and Kaputa Districts Province: Northern Province Country: Zambia Presenter: Patson Mwasila Title: Revolving Fund Administration Officer (RFAO)

Introduction The Lake Tanganyika Integrated Management Programme (LTIMP) is funded by Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) The Zambian component focuses on sedimentation control through promotion of measures that help limit soil erosion and seek to halt and reverse deforestation.

Introduction continues Sediment inflow is being reduced through an increase in the area of land brought under sustainable land use, particularly for agriculture and forestry. Emphasis has been on institutional strengthening with support to community participation in agriculture, forestry, and soil- erosion prevention

Introduction The project works closely with relevant government institutions and non governmental organization.

Project implementation Formulation of Natural Resources management plans and formulated community by- laws Capacity building communities and other stakeholders - workshops, demonstrations, meetings, awareness campaigns etc.

Revolving fund The project has a revolving fund component with an initial capital of USD 308,000. Farmers are organised in registered Savings and Credit cooperatives societies (SACCOS).

Best practices Results from enforcement of community by- laws – warning, fines, confiscation. Use of green manure (velvet beans) in soil improvement while reducing on the usage of inorganic fertilizer. Protecting fish from predators by using velvet beans leaves to change the colour of water

Best practices Integrated farming where farmers keeping local chickens and using manure in their farming system and formulating feed from crops Utilization of by products especially in bee keeper s- wax used in candle making. Formation of savings and credit cooperative society for on lending.

challenges Low levels of education making it difficult to train as TOT many as possible. Demand for project interventions outside project areas Limited parcel of land for woodlot establishment

Challenges continues Poor road network making Attitude change according to time among local politicians Rigidity among some local community members to give up natural destruction tendencies such as charcoal burning, illegal fishing and timber harvesting.

Community members drawing a map during formulation of Natural Resource Management Plans

Community members in Mwanamboko preparing a woodlot nursery.

Woodlot development to increase land coverage thereby reducing soil erosion

Trained community resource rangers patrolling the protected forests This is among the strategies employed by communities in enforcing by-laws and implementing the natural resource management plans.

Status of natural resources at the start of the project

Community members sharing experiences on joint forest management

The project also supports local chickens production as an alternative income generating activity

Participants displaying candles made during a workshop on processing of Non Forest Timber Products Besides, candle making, participants also learnt bee keeping, processing, shoe polish making and many more

A group of farmers sharing experiences on the importance of improved fallow using velvet beans. The project promotes sustainable farming methods including low input agriculture

A group of farmers planting vertivar grass on a contour ridge. Improved farming practices including ploughing across the slope, making contour ridge, storm drains, planting vertivar grass are among other measures being used to reduce soil erosion in project sites.

Promoting fish farming as an alternative income generating activity.
