HAZARD and RISK  Risk assessment requires you to know hazard & risk  HAZARD is something with the potential to cause harm  RISK is the likelihood that harm with occur  RISK = HAZARD x EXPOSURE 7

RISK CONTROL  Aim – to minimise risk by:  Removing known hazards  Avoiding known hazard  Putting in place workplace precautions E.g. guard around moving machinery parts, respirator, gloves etc. 22

5 STEPS TO RISK ASSESSMENT 1. LOOK AT HAZARDS 2. DECIDE WHO MAY BE HARMED AND HOW 3. EVALUATE RISKS - are existing precautions adequate? 4. RECORD YOUR FINDINGS 5. REVIEW from time to time & revise if necessary 23

HIERARCHY OF CONTROL 1. Remove the hazard  Choose a safer alternative if possible  If not, change process, change hazardous chemical, use safer form of chemical etc. 2. Minimise exposure to hazard  e.g. use fume hood, enclose system/equipment, reduce number of people exposed/time of exposure 3. Provide training 4. Use PPE if hazard cannot be removed  This should be a last resort, chosen appropriately and maintained/serviced 5. Use safety signs if hazard cannot be removed 24
