At the end of this session you will be able to: Identify the key responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) Recognise the employees and employers responsibilities under the HASAWA Identify what is a hazard and how to control the risks while at work State the health and safety control measures within your work place Recognise the accident reporting process within your workplace The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) imposes a general duty on employers, self-employed, employees, suppliers and owners of premises to ensure that their workplaces are safe and offer no risk to health.

To take reasonable care of your own health and safety. Consider the safety of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work. Work in accordance with information, instruction, training and supervision provided. Not to interfere with anything that has been provided in the interests of health and safety. Report defects in plant and equipment, or shortcomings in existing safety arrangements, to a Manager. Your responsibilities (2) Not to undertake any task which you do not possess the relevant competency and/or physical capability. You must use any personal protective equipment provided to you.

A hazard is something which could cause harm, damage or injury. For example: A dog: provides a threat to safety because it may bite Risk is = Severity Likelihood

Best method is to remove hazard totally Otherwise avoid the hazard A kennel or muzzle is: Risk control measure or Workplace precaution

DEFINITION OF AN ACCIDENT “An accident at work is an unplanned happening or event, with a specific cause or causes, which arises out of or in connection with work and leads to injury” Accident Reporting Process Report accident to a Manager/Supervisor immediately. They will then ensure Appropriate medical attention is made available The area is made safe You complete the accident book (before the end of your shift) They will investigate the accident (within 48 hours) and act on their conclusions
