E-LEARNING At Churchill Park School

Parent Evening – E-learning 27 August 2014 New Zealand Curriculum definition of e- learning: E- learning is described as “learning supported by or facilitated by ICT (Information and Communication Technologies ” The focus is on personalised learning with teachers not dispensing knowledge but facilitating learning to develop the New Zealand curriculum vision of developing 21 st C learners who are... “confident, connected, actively involved lifelong learners”

E-learning helps to :  Assist the making of connections by enabling students to enter and explore new learning environments, overcoming barriers of distance and time – e.g. Skyping relationships with Korean students who have later visited the school, ing experts, other students, teachers, members of the community, making movies about our school  Facilitate shared learning by enabling students to join or create communities of learners that extend well beyond the classroom – again through technology connecting up through non school pathways, homework accessible at home, shared documents, shared reflections and blogs  Help create supportive learning environments by offering resources that take account of individual, cultural or developmental differences –a variety of resources to suit a variety of needs – Mathletics, Reading Eggs, Sunshine online, STEPS Literacy, learning of languages, Science and Technology videos etc.  Enhance opportunities to learn by offering students virtual experiences and tools that save them time, allowing them to expand their learning through opening up new and different ways of learning – school Ultranet, making I movies, group and collaborative work

In 2013 the Board of Trustees began exploring the optional BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) concept and how it could enhance learning for students at Churchill Park. They looked at a number of aspects including:  Research  Best practice  Policies and procedures  Reviewing other similar high decile, full primary schools  Networking with other schools, including Glendowie College In Term 4, a trial was held in Year 7 /8 after implementing policies, communicating with parents and preparing students for this change. This went extremely smoothly and was reviewed by all as enhancing student learning – through further engagement, enjoyment, and choice offered surrounding learning, particularly linking with the Independent Learning Programme in Year 7 /8. In 2014, the BYOD option was offered in Year 5 /6 and was similarly reviewed by students and staff. The Board of Trustees is currently putting together a statement that summarises the careful journey taken by the Board in the implementation of this policy.

Students visited the Computer lab once a week. One off lessons not necessarily linked to learning in class. Basic skills Little or no collaborative work.

Infrastructure SNUP x 3 layered Gigabit Core Switch (server room) 8 Gigabit managed switches (round the school) Fibre Backbone CAT 6 links Domain Server, Terminal Server, NAS storage WIRELESS 2012/13 (supporting Flexible Learning) Ruckus Wireless Controller (BYOD operates in class times only) Access Points in Rooms 1-7 & STA supporting BYOD Access Points in Library and Teacher Resource Room as well as the Hall, Rooms 9, 12 and Junior Reading Room Network for Learning/UFB 2013 Ultrafast broadband installed as part of Government initiative. 100mbps up and down, uncapped and FREE

G.A.T.E. and e-learning Supports learning and adds flexibility to our inclusive model Problem solving philosophy Hands off approach

Our focus is getting the children reading, writing and learning early maths skills …the ‘good old fashioned way’. We slowly introduce computers as a tool to assist learning.

Teachers model using the internet to; Ask questions/find answers See You tube clips Dictionary Students absent classmates View ‘good’ examples e.g. art

Examples from our Looking Up (space) topic Viewed moon phases, planet order and rotation Asked Google questions to find answers to our questions – could see video clips, photos, animations… answers Used dictionary to find definitions of words

Year 1s Mouse control - Roll

Reading Eggs Logging on, CAPS

Year 2s Sunshine on line

Class Pages to share work and ideas of good websites
