What is the EU? The EU is a group of 28 member states from all over the Europe The aim (= goal) of the EU is to create a political and economic community that cooperates in economics, trade, social issues (education, healthe care), foreign policy, security, defence and judicial matters → people from all over the EU are free to travel, study, work and live in another member state without needing a visa

History of the EU 1951 – The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) is established (France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg 1967 – ECSC became European Community (EC). Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom joined 1993 – the Maastricht Treaty (=agreement) transformed the EC into the EU. Sweden, Finland and Austria joined 2004 – 10 more countries (also the Czech Rep.) took up membership, it was the biggest enlargement 2007 – Romania and Bulgaria entered the EU 2013 – Croatia is the last member

Symbols of the EU The European flag - the 12 stars in a circle symbolise the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe. The European anthem - the melody used to symbolise the EU comes from the Ninth Symphony composed in 1823 by Ludwig Van Beethoven Europe Day - The ideas behind the European Union were first put forward on 9 May 1950 by French foreign minister Robert Schuman. Structure of the EU The EU has a rotating presidency. Member countries take turns being in charge for six months at a time. The function is mostly symbolic The European Council consists of heads of state from all member countries. They propose (= suggest) issues to be discussed at future meetings
