VOCABULARY **Much of your success on the NWEA is because of vocabulary… You can’t answer a question if you don’t know what it is asking.

Vocab words you need to know anecdote- a short and amusing/interesting story about a real person/event example- Before beginning a lecture on why staying out late is inappropriate, a father tells his daughter about a scary incident he had one time when he stayed out too late

Vocab words you need to know multisyllabic- a word with multiple syllables example- The word multisyllabic has 5 syllables

Vocab words you need to know thesaurus- a book containing antonyms and synonyms of words. guide words/letters-words that are at the top of a page in a dictionary/reference book that show the first and last words on a page.

Vocab words you need to know viewpoint- a way of looking at or thinking about something. The school board and the students have different viewpoints about the uniform policy. anthology- a collection writings by different authors. You literature book is an anthology.

Vocab words you need to know brochure-a small booklet that has information about a product, place, etc. The counselor’s office has brochures on good study habits and bullying. headline- a heading on a newspaper or magazine that is set in larger print and illustrates(tells) the topic of the article. “Teenage Boy Killed in Park, Local Gang Members Suspected”

Vocab words you need to know secondary source- were written after an event has occured and gives a second hand account of a person, event, etc. Someone writing an analysis of George Washington’s inaugural address is a secondary source. primary source- a primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. George Washington’s inaugural address is a primary source.

Vocab words you need to know contradict-to speak or declare against and idea The evidence from the experiment contradicted the original hypothesis. intent- the purpose or determination/motivation When the author added the twist ending, his intent was to leave the audience feeling surprised.

Vocab words you need to know archetype- the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied. The devil is the archetype of a villain. parable- a short story designed to illustrate or teach a lesson or truth

Vocab words you need to know alliteration- the occurrence of the same letter/sound at the beginning of closely connected words. homonym- words that have the same spelling and pronunciation, but different meanings.

Vocab Words you need to know ●idiom- a phase or expression that has a figurative meaning that is different than its literal meaning. ●assonance- repetition of a vowel sound to create internal rhyme (usually in poetry).

Vocab Words you need to know ●consonance- characterized by the use of the same consonant in close session (Alliteration is an example of consonance) ●onomatopoeia- the formation of a word by imitation of its sound.

Vocab words you need to know ●Satire- the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices

●irony- the use of words, images, dialogue that convey a meaning that is opposite of the literal meaning. situational irony dramatic ironyverbal irony

●pun. the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words. the word or phrase used in this way.

Foreshadowing- a warning or indication of a future event

●paradox- a statement that seems to contradict itself, though it may be true. ●a combination of words that seem to have opposite meanings, but are used together. paradox/oxymoron notes link

●stereotype- an oversimplified image of a particular person, group, or thing. ●synecdoche- a part of speech in which a part is meant to represent the whole.

Sonnet- a thirteen line poem written in iambic pentameter annotated sonnet link

Haiku- a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Consists of 3 lines. The first and last lines have 5 syllables. The line in the middle consists of 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme.

limerick- a humorous 5- line poem with a strict rhyme scheme- aabba
