LCLS-II Project Overview David Schultz LCLS-II Deputy Project Director March 19, 2012

Outline Slide 2 Project priorities and status Key features Project overview & layout Project schedule and path forward LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012

LCLS-II Project Priorities Build a highly productive scientific user facility  Maximize technical capabilities for the longer- range future Simultaneous SXR and HXR operation Experiment hall capacity Undulator hall length Control the Project Cost/Schedule  DOE Guidance is $405M Total Project Cost  Formal Project completion (CD-4) in 2019 LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Slide 3

Conceptual Design (CD-1) approval 10/14/11 Long-lead procurements approval 3/14/12 Injector system and support facility Fully funded for FY12 DOE Preliminary Design (CD-2) Review as early as August, 2012 Establish Project baseline schedule and budget LCLS-II Project Status LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Slide 4

Second 120 Hz injector and 1km LINAC section  LCLS-1 and LCLS-II operate independently Two New Undulator sources with variable gap  In a new undulator tunnel  Electrons to two undulators in parallel, 60 Hz each  Soft ( ,000 eV)  Hard (2, ,000 eV)  New underground experiment hall, two floors Key Features of LCLS-II LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Slide 5

Slide 6 DOE CD-3a Review of the LCLS-II Project, Dec 6-7, 2011 Linac Coherent Light Source II 1-km point Sectors of Linac (1 km) CD-0 10 April 2010, CD-1 14 October 2011 X-ray Transport Optics/Diagnostics New Underground Experiment Hall Bypass LCLS Linac in PEP Xport Line New Beam Transport Hall SXR, HXR Undulators

Electron Systems Schematic Layout LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, Electron Systems largely copied from LCLS-1 Gun, BC’s, diagnostics, e - dumps Slide 7

LCLS-II New Construction Layout LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 LCLS-1 Experimental Hall 2 Undulator Hall 2Beam Transport Hall 2 Slide 8

LCLS-II Undulator Hall Space for SXR Seeding and Tapering Undulator tunnel is 286 meters in length  Space for baseline 114 m HXR and 66 m SXR undulators  Room allocated for seeding and tapering extensions LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Space for HXR Seeding and Tapering Baseline SXR Baseline HXR e - Beam Dump Front End Slide 9

Undulator Magnets LCLS-II Undulators are based on undulators designed at LBNL for the ALS. Servo Motor Strongbacks Compensating Springs Linear Encoder Linear Slide Magnetic Structure LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Undulator Hall Cross Section Undulator tunnel is similar in cross section to the LCLS tunnel. Slide 10

Experimental Hall 2 Layout Space for 4 experimental stations in an 80m long cavern. Full size second floor for HVAC, racks, control rooms LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Front End SystemsArea for Soft X-raysArea for Hard X-rays 80m 14m Slide 11

LCLS-II Project Schedule Slide 12 LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 First Light  Install Instruments EH2 complete 

2012 plans Start Injector facilities construction in July Start Injector technical system fabrication Complete Construction designs by the end of the year. Develop the Project baseline schedule and budget for presentation to DOE in August. LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Slide 13

Summary LCLS-II will add capacity and capability to the LCLS scientific program, and will provide space for expansion. To minimize cost and risk, electron systems rely heavily on LCLS-1 designs. LCLS-II will dovetail with the LUSI-II project. First light in LCLS-II New Instruments Workshops, March 19-22, 2012 Slide 14
