Peer Pressure and Self Image

Peer Pressure - Children begin to develop abstract, fluid and adaptive thinking skills at an early age - world no longer ‘black and white’. - Cool vs uncool - Play becomes more sophisticated - Peer pressure takes on many forms and when it changes a child’s behaviour = problem - Home model - What can we do to prepare and support our children?

Building resilience: -It starts at home: no greater prevention than unconditional love, genuine regard, and positive recognition. -Choosing home values over peer pressure -Avoid negative labels -Build self esteem -Lots of genuine praise -Positive coaching to deal with peer pressure Peer Pressure

Self Esteem Self esteem = feelings about the self overall Self efficacy = the ability to take action and achieve specific goals, enhancing feelings of well-being and life satisfaction

Boosting self-efficacy Providing challenges Help with setting realistic goals Encouragement through failure – part of learning Genuine encouragement Encourage self reflection

Boosting self-efficacy

Growth Mindset Think about your own mindset – be as honest with your self as you can! Use the statements from the grid and make a list of the ones that best fit you.

Growth Mindset Children with a growth mindset believe that intelligence can be developed - see school as a place to develop their abilities and think of challenges as opportunities to grow. Children with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is fixed at birth and doesn’t change or changes very little with practice. - see school as a place where their abilities are evaluated, they focus on looking smart over learning, and they interpret mistakes as a sign that they lack talent.

Growth Mindset Permission to fail Mindset language Describe the behaviour, not the person Ask for a specific change Praise process, not just effort
