Learning Target: I can investigate the Platt Amendment to understand the results of the Spanish-American War. Do Now: Write a prediction for the Spanish American War.

How did the U.S. get involved in Spanish American War?  President McKinley sent the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to stop riots breaking out.  The following month the Maine exploded in the harbor, killing 260 soldiers.  U.S. felt Spain was behind it, U.S. demanded Cuba’s independence, Spain did not respond, and the war began.

Spanish-American War  Spain vs. America  U.S. wanted to help Spain’s colonies receive its freedom from Spain. (Cuba), Cuba and Spain fighting, Cuba wants independence from Spain.  Why get involved if you are the U.S.?  U.S. traded with Cuba, if Cuba was at war it would disrupt the business between America/Cuba  U.S. did not want war but did not want Spain to mistreat Cuba.

Results of the Spanish-American War  “Remember the Maine!”- became the call to arms. Battles of the Spanish American war took place in Spanish colonies:  War in the Philippines  War in the Caribbean  Spain surrenders, U.S. defeats Spain with the help of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, gain Spain’s colonies of Guam, Philippines, and Puerto Rico.  U.S. becomes a world power with new territories in various parts of the world.
