Recruitment, Selection and Training_2

Learning Objectives 1. How we can advertise jobs. 2. How firms (businesses) can select and recruits employees? 3. Identify a basic contract of employment 4. Why and How we train employees. To recognise….

Advertising the Job In order to attract applicants a firm can advertise in a number of places: Job Centres Internally (Via notice Boards and Journals) Internet National Newspapers Local Newspapers Trade Journals Local Shop Window

What Should the Advert Say? A good job advert will give the following information: Job Title Brief Description Location Basic Salary/Wage Information Address and/or Contract Details Qualifications/Experience Required Organisations Identity and Logo

How do Firms Select? Once applications have been received a firm must short-list, or select the best 4 or 5 There are a number of tools that can help: Interviews Letter of Application Curriculum Vitæ (CV) Numeracy Tests Aptitude Tests

The Contract of Employment This is a legal document It will most likely contain the: Name of employer and employee Date on which employment started Job Title Rate of pay, frequency of pay and payment method Normal hours of work Holiday entitlement & holiday pay Conditions relating to sickness and injury Pension arrangements Length of notice required by both parties Disciplinary rules and procedures Arrangements for handling problems

What is Training? Once workers have been found they must be introduced to their new working environment This is done through training There are usually 4 reasons why training will take place: InductionUpgrading Skills Multi-Skilling Re-Training

Induction This is a programme aimed to introduce a new employee to a job It is used to: Familiarise the worker with their job Make the employee as efficient as possible Encourage new workers to be committed to the organisation Induction day at school??? What was good about it What was bad about it How would you improve it?

Other Training Methods There are 2 ways in which workers can be trained: On-the-Job Training This is where a worker remains at their usual place of work and learns how to do their job Examples include: Off-the-Job Training This is where a worker is trained away from their usual workplace This may be at: TeachersDoctors College Training Centre

Problems of Training It is expensive! Off-the Job training is more expensive because Courses must be paid for The worker is not producing anything The worker will still have to be paid Small firms are often unable to afford training This is why the government provides help and advice to small businesses in a local area
