EDUCATING TOWARD A CULTURE OF PEACE

Meaning of “peace” needs to go beyond “absence of war or direct violence ” All learners, from children and adults, facilitated to understand “peace” in all its forms and levels, including direct physical violence, structural violence (social, economic, political), cultural violence, psychological violence and environmental violence. Motivate learners to understand a holistic, multi- dimensional framework of peace responsive to fulfilling all aspects of human security and planetary security.

UNESCO views “culture of peace” as: a growing body of shared values, attitudes, behaviors and ways of life based on : Nonviolence respect for fundamental rights and freedoms; understanding, tolerance and solidarity; sharing and free flow of communication; and full participation and empowerment of women UNESCO

Drawing on peace education work in various contexts in the Global north and Global South, developed a “flower metaphor” for educating toward a culture of peace (Toh Swee-Hin & Virginia Cawagas)

Goals of Peace Education How can education contribute to a better awareness of the root causes of conflicts, violence and peacelessness at the personal, interpersonal,c ommunity, national, regional and global levels?
