2 Definitions of Peace Education (from 1 st stakeholder meeting) What is it? Changing values, attitudes and behaviours to promote healthy & peaceful responses to conflict, and respect for everyone’s rights Non-violent communication, non- confrontational state of mind Holistic approach, mental & physical inner peace Non-violent conflict resolution Tolerance & respect for our differences Respect for human rights, dignity & justice Consulting with one another Who are focus? Individuals in Society Parents Early childhood educators Teachers Peers Leaders Media Youth Peace = Contentment Peace = Harmony Peace = Absence of Conflict

3 Pilot Activities 7 target groups –Children –Youth –Adults –NDC/CDC –Religious Leaders –Front Line Workers (FLW) teachers, health workers, police, social workers, probation officers agricultural extension workers –Health Centres Inter-agency collaboration –Min. LHSSS –GRPA –Help & Shelter –WAVE –Brahma Kumaris (Living Values) –Volunteer Youth Corps –Love Outreach International –Men of Purpose –UNICEF 3 target communities –Lodge –Bettervervagting –Covent Garden

4 Activities 3 Agencies took lead –GRPA: Children & Youth –WAVE: Adults & NDC/CDC –Help & Shelter: Religious Leaders, FLW & Health Centres Workshops –Different sessions from several agencies Evaluation –Attendance –Participant questionnaires Positive & Negative Feelings Knowledge Attitudes & Beliefs

6 Recommendations: Recruitment Sensitisation & mobilisation period essential Participatory planning with target group / community Package programme for target group –Combine with other activity (e.g. IT for youth) –Select attractive name Develop strategy for difficult to recruit target groups e.g. men, youth

7 Recommendations: Methods & Activities More Participatory The Better Creative / fun / interesting activities –age appropriate e.g. Painting & singing for children Role playing for adults Quizzes for youth Focus on knowledge/skills perceived as very relevant by target group e.g.: –Adults – parenting skills, domestic abuse & community action planning –Youth – discussions of reproductive health

8 Recommendations: Inter-Agency Co-operation Pre-activity familiarisation for facilitators from different agencies –Get to know one another –Learn what each agencies does Joint planning of programme Agencies submit to lead agencies: –Materials (pens, paper etc.) –Venue requirements (space,

9 Recommendations: Delivery Integrate peace education into normal activities of target groups e.g.: –Schools for children, teachers & parents –Skills training for youth Spread programme over longer periods so participants can internalise knowledge and practice skills

10 Recommendations: Further Development Co-ordinating Body –Composed of reps from contributing agencies Plan of activities –Time frame –Locations –Budget Create Peace Education Manual –Revise content & methodology –Make widely available Increase Capacity –Network with each other –Train each other in specialist skills –Training in funding agency procedures Coordination of Funding – Donor Matrix
