Grammar Important knowledge which supports writing and reading as it allows the children to understand the English Language. Now a key part of the Year 6 SATS. A greater importance within the new National Curriculum. Exploring different word types, patterns and how they are used; the different types and parts of a sentence as well as different punctuation.

Punctuation Basic sentence punctuation. Commas for lists. When I went to the shop I bought tomatoes, bread, milk, chocolate and sweets. The boy was dirty, frustrated and tired after his football match. Question marks. Where are you going? Exclamation marks – shock, anger and surprise Don’t do that!

Apostrophes for possession and contraction. I would’ve helped you – contraction Look at Joseph’s bag. The teachers’ smiled at the writing - possession Commas to mark the different parts (clauses) within a sentence. The boy, who was nine years old, walked into Year 4. Inverted commas for speech. “Hello Sam, what have you been up to today?”
