1 Grammar - Key stage 1 (Yrs 1 and 2)
From 2016 all Year 2 pupils will be expected to sit a Grammar and Spelling Test during May.

2 Reporting Results Test papers will be marked by the teachers and results will be reported to parents at the end of the academic year. Children will need to achieve a standardised score of 100 to pass. Any child who does not achieve this will not have achieved the expected level. Parents will be informed whether their child is: - P. Levels - Working Towards Expected Level - Working at Expected Level - Working at Greater Depth

3 Key Stage 1 Tests The children will also be expected to sit 2 Maths Tests – Arithmetic paper Reasoning paper 2 Reading / Comprehension Tests All tests will only form one part of the Teacher’s judgement. Teacher Assessment will be crucial when forming the overall assessment result.

4 Expectations By the end of year 2, pupils should have knowledge of the following and be able to use them in context – full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas in lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive.

5 They will also be expected to use –
1. different types of sentences – command, statement, question and exclamation. 2. expanded noun phrases e.g. The blue butterfly 3. past and present tenses correctly 4. subordination ( when, if, that, because) and coordination (and but) in sentences. They need to know and use - nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and suffixes.

6 What are we doing in school?
Grammar is being taught discreetly, as part of a literacy lesson and even in other curriculum areas. We use reading sessions, story telling and writing tasks and even art activities to support the learning of Grammar. There are clear objectives and outcomes for tasks. The children will have some Grammar Homework to complete.

7 At home, what can you do? Complete set homework and support your child with it. Look at the Grammar used in their reading books e.g. Spot the noun, adjective etc in the sentence. Looking at pictures. Listing all the nouns they can see. Can they then add adjectives to describe the noun. Through writing and telling stories.

8 Grammar Guide Noun – naming word e.g. dog, tree, Sunday, London and I (pronoun) etc. Verb – doing word e.g. hopping, running, screaming, holding etc. Adjective – describes a noun e.g. the fluffy rabbit, the black cloud etc. Adverb – describes a verb e.g. The girl walked quietly. Sentence types – statement e.g. The girl was walking across the road. question e.g. Do you like my new hat? exclamation e.g. Watch out! command e.g. Pick up that book. Commas in lists e.g. The boy ate bananas, apples, strawberries and plums. Possessive apostrophe e.g. the dog’s bed. Contracted apostrophe e.g. Can’t, wouldn’t, I’ll etc. Conjunctions – coordinated sentences e.g. The dog went to the park and he fell into the pond. ( two equal sentences joined by a conjunction) Subordinate clauses e.g. You must eat your dinner if you want pudding. (a clause is added which is dependent on the main sentence) Suffixes - go on the end of the word e.g. ly, est, ing, ed. Knowledge of homophones e.g. witch and which; their and there; poor, paw, pour and pore etc
