FIGHT OR FLIGHT A couple of examples

WITH A PARTNER DISCUSS WITH YOUR PARTNER AND WRITE DOWN YOUR RESPONSES: 1. What is your definition of Stress? 2. What is your definition of a Stressor? 3. In your opinion, what are the top 3 Stresses that teenagers face today? 4. Why are some people able to handle stress and some are not?

WHAT IS STRESS Generally, most people refer to stress as negative experiences that leave us feeling overwhelmed

STRESS and STRESSOR STRESS The body’s reaction to a change or a demand. STRESSOR Life events that can create a negative reaction to our mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

STRESS Stress is really more about our capacity to handle change than it is about whether that change makes us feel good or bad LOW DEMAND = LOW STRESS HIGH DEMAND = HIGH STRESS BOREDOM: complete lack of stress and demand

Stress occurs when the perceived demands of a situation outweigh our available resources INTERNAL RESOURCES: Knowledge, Courage, Experience EXTERNAL RESOURCES: Emotional and Physical support from others, Money etc

SCENARIOS How stressful would it be if your house burned down? Scale of 1-10? How stressful would it be if you were wealthy and you had 3 other houses? How stressful is your first day of work as compared to stress after 1 year?

What Causes Stress? TYPES OF STRESSORS Environmental stressors are conditions or events in your physical environment that cause you stress. (pollution, poverty, etc) Biological stressors are conditions that make it difficult for your body to take part in daily activities. (illness, injury) Thinking stressors any type of mental challenge that can cause you stress (Tests, tough choices) Behavioral stressors are unhealthy behaviors that cause stress. (alcohol, drugs, lack of sleep) Life change stressors are major life changes—negative or positive— that lead to stress. (death, marriage, move)

With your partner… Complete Stressor Worksheet STRESSORS ARE LISTED, DISCUSS and label what type of stressor each is. 1.ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSOR 2.BIOLOGICAL STRESSOR 3.THINKING STRESSOR 4.BEHAVIORAL STRESSOR 5.LIFE CHANGE STRESSOR

NEW PARTNER.. NEW SEAT ….. Discuss and write down. “STRESS IS ALWAYS BAD FOR YOU”… do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?

POSITIVE STRESS VS NEGATIVE STRESS Positive Stress Stress that energizes you and helps you reach a goal is called eustress. Negative Stress Stress that makes you sick or keeps you from reaching a goal is called distress.

POSITIVE STRESS VS NEGATIVE STRESS EUSTRESS (POSITIVE) -Motivates / Focuses Energy -Is perceived as within our coping abilities -Feels Exciting -Improves Performance - Short term DISTRESS (NEGATIVE) -Causes anxiety or concern -Can be short or long term -Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities -Feels Unpleasant -Decreases Performance -Can lead to physical and mental problems

POSITIVE STRESS VS NEGATIVE STRESS An adolescent girl with limited social and financial support might view being pregnant as a negative stress, while a middle-aged woman with adequate financial and social support might see pregnancy as an exciting and hopeful time

The Less confidence people have in their abilities, the more likely it is that they have their performance ability disrupted by stress People typically experience more anxiety if they expect a negative outcome (pessimist)
