4 5 Categories of Stress Biological Stressors: illness, disabilities, injuries Environmental Stressors: poverty, pollution, crowding, noise, natural disasters Cognitive or Thinking Stressors: way you perceive a situation, how things around you affect you. Personal Behavior Stressors: negative reactions in the body and mind causes by tobacco, alcohol, drugs, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity. Life Situation Stressors: death, separation, divorce, troubled relationships or friendships.

7 WHAT TYPES OF STRESS EXIST?  Eustress Good stress that acts as a motivator to succeed when you are prepared  Distress Bad stress that causes the mind and body harm Stress that can lead to disease or other health problems over time BOYS DO NOW: When do you feel distress? Brainstorm some examples from your own experiences or that of others. GIRLS DO NOW: When do you feel eustress? Brainstorm some examples from your own experiences or that of others.

9 Stress Web Activity Label box on your stress web as follows: Negative Emotions Friendships Financial Strains Academics Family Conflict Dating and relationships Other Illness or injuries Peer Pressure For each circle, identify a stressful experience in your life, how did it affect you and how did you respond to it.

18 Identifying the Stress Response Every day you leave home about 15 minutes late, never being sure if you are going to make the bus or miss it. It is the night before a big exam and as usual you have waited till the last minute to prepare. This also happens to be an exam you are the weakest in subject matter! Your significant other has just ended a one year relationship. You were not expecting this and you still care very much for this person.

What are some of the physiological symptoms associated with Anna’s stressors? What can Anna do to eliminate or control some of these stressors?
