The kingdom of Israel was outwardly at peace but there was idolatry, immorality and political unrest present despite their prosperity. They had no sympathy. o They mistreated the poor. (Amos 2:6, 4:1, 5:12) o They did not help the afflicted. (Amos 2:7) o They mistreated others for their own gain. (Amos 4:1, 8:4-6) They had sunk into deeper immorality. (Amos 2:7) They even discouraged others from serving God. (Amos 2:9-12, 5:10, 7:12-13) They had a religious life, but not a consecrated life of worship and service in truth and sincerity. (Amos 4:4-5, 5:21-23) They trusted in being God’s chosen people, but they failed to serve Him. With greater privilege comes greater responsibility. (Amos 3:1-2, 5:18-20, 6:8)
The purpose of Amos was to warn Israel of her coming doom. Amos, as well as the other prophets of God, were simply bringing God’s word to the people. God had tried other ways to get Israel to repent: Famine (4:6) Drought (4:7-8) Crop failure (4:9) Pestilence and destruction (4:10-11) Despite this, they had still rejected God.
