Amos 7:14 “Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit.” Amos 7:14 “Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit.”

Dead Sea Jordan River Bethlehem TEKOA Amos lived in Tekoa which was nine miles from Bethlehem in the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Yet, he prophesied mainly for Israel and only incidentally for Judah. Jerusalem

The kingdom of Israel was outwardly at peace but there was idolatry, immorality and political unrest present despite their prosperity. They had no sympathy. o They mistreated the poor. (Amos 2:6, 4:1, 5:12) o They did not help the afflicted. (Amos 2:7) o They mistreated others for their own gain. (Amos 4:1, 8:4-6) They had sunk into deeper immorality. (Amos 2:7) They even discouraged others from serving God. (Amos 2:9-12, 5:10, 7:12-13) They had a religious life, but not a consecrated life of worship and service in truth and sincerity. (Amos 4:4-5, 5:21-23) They trusted in being God’s chosen people, but they failed to serve Him. With greater privilege comes greater responsibility. (Amos 3:1-2, 5:18-20, 6:8)

The purpose of Amos was to warn Israel of her coming doom. Amos, as well as the other prophets of God, were simply bringing God’s word to the people. (Amos 3:1-8) Amos also proclaimed that he was not a trained prophet, but he spoke what God commanded. (Amos 7:14-15) The purpose of Amos was to warn Israel of her coming doom. (Amos 7:14-15)

God had tried other ways to get Israel to repent: Famine (4:6) Drought (4:7-8) Crop failure (4:9) Pestilence and destruction (4:10-11) Despite this, they had still rejected God. So, God said – “…prepare to meet your God, O Israel.” (4:12) God had tried other ways to get Israel to repent: Famine (4:6) Drought (4:7-8) Crop failure (4:9) Pestilence and destruction (4:10-11) Despite this, they had still rejected God. Although it was too late for the nation, God still wanted the individuals to turn back to Him Amos 5:4-6, Amos 5:24 Although it was too late for the nation, God still wanted the individuals to turn back to Him Amos 5:4-6, Amos 5:24

Because of their sin, God had determined to bring destruction and exile upon Israel. Amos 3:11-15 Amos 5:26-27 Amos 8:7-14 Amos 9:1-7 Because of their sin, God had determined to bring destruction and exile upon Israel. Amos 3:11-15 Amos 5:26-27 Amos 8:7-14 Amos 9:1-7

AMOS 7 – 9 III. Visions Regarding the Future “In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the Lord who does this.” (Amos 9:11-12, ESV)
