2 The Siege In his 9 th year, Zedekiah rebelled against Babylon Soon after this, Babylon built a siege wall against Jerusalem Zedekiah asked Jeremiah about the outcome of this siege (Jer. 21:1-10) Jeremiah told the people to surrender if they wanted to live (21:9-10)

3 The Siege These events are recorded in Jer. 37:1-10 Early in the siege, Egypt came to fight Babylon Zedekiah took hope from this and sent men to inquire of Jeremiah Babylon left Jerusalem to go fight Egypt Jeremiah told Zedekiah’s men bad news – Egypt will return home – The Chaldeans will burn Jerusalem

4 Prophecies During the Siege These prophecies are found in Jer. 32:4; 34:1- 7; and Ezekiel 12:13 God told Zedekiah that he would see Nebuchadnezzar “eye to eye” Zedekiah would be taken to Babylon Zedekiah would die in peace in Babylon However, Zedekiah would not see the land of Babylon

5 Jeremiah In The Dungeon Jer. 38:1-13 Certain princes asked to put Jeremiah in a dungeon Zedekiah weakly granted permission Jeremiah was lowered by rope into the dungeon The bottom of the dungeon was mire Ebed-Melech asked permission to rescue Jeremiah Jeremiah remained in prison until the fall

6 Jeremiah Tells of the Fall Again Jeremiah 38:13-28 Zedekiah asks Jeremiah privately what will happen Jeremiah does not want to tell him Jeremiah tells him to surrender and spare the city Zedekiah is afraid of the Jews who have defected

7 The Breach (Jer. 39) Jerusalem’s wall was penetrated in Zedekiah’s 11 th year Zedekiah and his men fled by night They were overtaken in the plains of Jericho Zedekiah was taken to Riblah Nebuchadnezzar killed his sons and plucked out his eyes and took him to Babylon Nebuzaradan burned the city with fire and took the people and the valuables (2 Kin. 25:1-7)

9 Gedaliah Is Appointed Governor Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah as governor over those who remained He set up his headquarters in Mizpah (Mizpah in Benjamin) Gedaliah told the captains to gather wine, oil, and summer fruit Johanan told Gedaliah that Ishmael wanted to kill him Gedaliah did not believe him
