What is the DRA2? DRA2 is a reading assessment intended to: Identify students’ skills Plan instruction Monitor student growth Prepare students to meet Common Core Standards

The DRA2… Can be used when a child isn’t making progress in your class Does not need to be used with entire class Helps identify students’ independent strengths and weaknesses Determines a student’s independent reading level

When and where will you be administering the DRA2? At least twice a year to monitor growth During the core extension period, extra help, etc. The assessment takes approximately minutes for a student to complete Teacher will need additional time to analyze/evaluate the data

Preparing to Implement the DRA2 1.Determine which grade-level text to use For a struggling student, begin a grade-level below the student’s current grade. 2.Have books and forms needed for assessment (See kit) Make teacher and student copies of assessment forms 3.Prepare to administer a running record (See laminated Record of Oral Reading Guidelines)

Three Steps to the DRA2 Assessment 1.Reading Engagement (Student Reading Survey)  minutes 2.Oral Reading Fluency (One-on-one Running Record)  6-10 minutes 3.Comprehension (Student completes assessment independently.)  minutes

Reading Engagement Student completes the Student Reading Survey independently. It is suggested that students use reading logs or records of books read. This portion of the assessment may be administered at any time prior to the miscue analysis.

Miscue Analysis A miscue occurs when a student “says” something other than the exact printed text. During oral reading, teachers learn a great deal about whether the child is making sense of what is being read. As a result of the miscue analysis, the level of the assessment can be determined. Let’s review the laminated Record of Oral Reading Guidelines.

Determining Appropriate Level If the student reads the oral reading passage and his or her percent of accuracy or WPM falls within the shaded area (intervention or instructional levels), then the assessment is STOPPED and the student is assessed with a lower-level text. If the student reads the oral passage within the independent range of accuracy and WPM, then the assessment is continued at that level.

Administer Comprehension Section After miscue analysis, student independently generates predictions and questions. At this point, teacher should complete the analysis of Oral Reading Fluency and circle the descriptors on the DRA2 Continuum that best describe the student’s oral reading fluency. Student continues to read book independently. Student may go back to the beginning of the book. Next, student completes literal comprehension, interpretation, summary, reflection, and metacognitive awareness sections.

Analyzing Student Performance The descriptors of the Continuum indicate the student’s reading performance and also suggest support needed for instruction. Intervention (score of 1) Instructional (score of 2) Independent (score of 3) Advanced (score of 4) These descriptors are used in each of the three sections of the DRA2.

Focus on Instruction In the “Blackline Masters” you will find the DRA2 Focus For Instruction checklist at the end of each level. Each area of the DRA2 is addressed regarding the focus on instruction: –Reading Engagement –Oral Reading Fluency –Comprehension

Focus on Special Education DRA2 can help address students’ IEP goals and objectives. For example, the DRA2 Continuum can be immediately turned into measurable goals and objectives.
