States of Matter

Solid Definite shape Definite volume Particles are packed tightly together Particles can only vibrate, not move

Liquid Takes the shape of its container Definite volume Particles are touching, but can slide past each other

Gas Takes the shape of its container No definite volume (fills up the whole space) Particles bouncing off each other

Evaporation The warmth of the sun causes moisture to evaporate from the earth and plants.

CONDENSATION Gases COOL off to form liquids clouds dew

DEPOSITION Gases COOL off too fast and form solids frost

Freeze Cooling causes liquids to turn into solids.

Melting HEAT makes solids melt into liquids

Evaporate or Boil Heat causes liquids to change into gases.

SUBLIMATION Solids HEAT up too fast and form gases Dry ice

This is….? Evaporation (liquid changes to a gas)

Condensation (gas changes to a liquid) This is an example of which change of state?

Why do we sweat? (Perspire) Moisture EVAPORATING from our skin helps promote cooling.

Is my glass leaking? Sweating? Condensation – Change from a gas to a liquid because it is cooling off Where do we see this happening? Cars Grass Bus windows Seeing your breath ???

Keep your eyes open. Look for connections Why ‘dat’ Do ‘dat’?
