Phases of Matter What distinguishes the forms of matter?

States of Matter: SOLIDS Molecules vibrate back and forth. Particles don’t have the energy to move around each other. Does not flow Rigid structure Definite volume Definite shape

States of Matter: LIQUIDS Particle take the shape of their container. Particles have enough energy to move around each other. Definite volume NO definite shape

States of Matter: GASES Particles have enough energy to move around freely. Gases can exert pressure and they are compressible. Takes the shape and volume of a container. NO definite volume NO definite shape States of Matter

States of matter: PLASMA Most common state of matter in the universe. Gas-like mixture of particles. This occurs naturally on the sun and in stars. NO definite volume NO definite shape On earth, plasma can be found in florescent light bulbs.

How does energy change matter? Matter can change from one form to another by the addition or subtraction of energy. Solid  melting  Liquid Liquid  evaporation  Gas Gas  condensation  Liquid Liquid  freezing  Solid Solid  deposition  Gas Gas  sublimation  Solid

Phase changes: Heating TemperatureTemperature Time Solid Liquid Gas Melting Evaporation

Phase changes: Cooling TemperatureTemperature Time Solid Liquid Gas Condensation Freezing
