Delivering Social Justice Mark Fisher DWP Social Justice Director

What is Social Justice? Social justice is about giving individuals and families facing multiple disadvantages the support and tools they need to turn their lives around”

Department for Work and Pensions 3 3

4 1. A focus on prevention and early intervention 2. Where problems do arise, a focus on recovery and independence 3. Promoting work as the most sustainable route out of poverty 4. Encouraging innovation in the commissioning, funding and delivery of services 5. Recognising the role of local Government, the voluntary and community sector and grassroots delivery in offering the most targeted support 6. Empowering people and communities to take a greater responsibility for the services they use 7. Ensuring that interventions provide a fair deal for the taxpayer What’s in the strategy?

Department for Work and Pensions 5 Committed focus from the centre Empowering entrepreneurial, local leadership Working in partnership with our stakeholders and each other Enabling an active voluntary and community sector Understanding and leveraging what already works Promoting great ideas and innovation - for example in data sharing, in social investment and in PBR contracting What does success depend on?

Department for Work and Pensions 6 What does this mean for us? A real opportunity for us to make it easier to get long term results for a group of people that include our heaviest service users. A set of powerful ideas with which we can help design and adapt local and national services for these cases A high profile lever to influence service commissioners and delivery organisations to: –Link up local services even more holistically –Share expertise, best practice and innovation –Encourage investment from private and social investors A reminder of the broad network we need to deliver our aspirations, and a chance to show effective cross-government working in action

Department for Work and Pensions 7 What else can we do? Ask questions: How can I embed Social Justice in what I do? What do I need from others? What can I offer others? Link up: make the right connections, form partnerships
